JULY 2006 This month at NT, local mystery author Laurie Moore, presented a workshop on writing snappy dialogue. Laurie taught NT members what constitutes superior dialogue, how it can be used, and how to fix yours if it isn’t great. Laurie was armed with plenty of examples to illustrate the lesson. It was a lively program with excellent handouts.
At the age of six, Laurie Moore wrote her first novel in orange crayon on blue construction paper and gave the mystery-horror hybrid to her father for his birthday. This fifth generation Texas was reared in south Texas and graduated from The University of Texas with a BA degree. At her parents' urging to become a Spanish teacher, she rebelled and joined the police department. For six years, she worked street patrol and criminal investigations until the brass decided to promote her to the rank of sergeant (their way of getting a maverick officer to comply with standard operating procedures). Bad move.
She later worked as a DA Investigator in Austin, Lockhart, and San Antonio before moving (kicking and screaming) to Fort Worth to attend law school.
Constable's Run, The Lady Godiva Murder and Constable's Apprehension are her first three novels. The Wild Orchid Society debuted in the spring of 2004 and Constable's Wedding was released in October 2005.
Laurie holds an active police commission. She is currently a reserve deputy constable in Tarrant County and maintains a thriving law office in the Cultural District of Fort Worth (aka Cowtown & The Panther City). She is also a board member of the DFW Writers Workshop. ~~Carolyn Williamson
