Give us some background on yourself.
I am happily married and the mother of fantastic little girl who struggles with autism. It’s a huge part of my life and I talk about it a lot. I’m actually coordinating a box set this Christmas under my new pen name, Emma Roman, where all the proceeds will go to the Autism Society of America. Very excited about that. I have two Basset Hounds at home that are mine and usually one or two Basset fosters at a time. My husband and I love dogs and this is such a great way to make a huge difference in a dogs’ life. To give them a second chance to find a home.
What do you write?
As Krystal Shannan, I write a smorgasbord of action-filled-thrill-seeking paranormal romance. I will be launching a second pen name this Christmas season as Emma Roman and will be writing contemporary romance and romantic suspense. Very excited about that venture as well and where it will take me over the next few years.
Please tell us what you write and a little bit about your writing journey.
I have always written. For as long as I can remember, I’ve scribbled stories into a notebook. Then back in the fall of 2012 I entered a pitch contest on a blog and had my manuscript requested. Hah! The manuscript I hadn’t written yet. I really did the contest as sort of a dare from a friend and never in a million years thought anyone would ask for it. So in one weekend, I wrote three chapters to send to her. And three weeks later I had churned out the rest of the novella. That was the beginning of the realization that I could write for other people. That other people actually might want to read the crazy stories that lived in my head. I ended up publishing three novellas with a small press before a dear friend of mine, Liliana Hart, told me I should try doing it on my own. I took her advice and never looked back.
Plotter or Pantser?
A wee bit of both.
Do you use critique partners?
Yes. I have a fabulous lady I met in an online class where we totally clicked. I swear, if we didn’t live on the opposite sides of the country, I’d be at her house every single day. I also have a phenomenal group of ladies, we formed an LLC together called Chick Tales, and I run almost everything through their brains as well. If I’m ever stumped I know I have a great support group to push me through.
Do you have a writing schedule? How do you organize your time?
At the moment, due to my daughter’s intensive ABA therapy schedule, I don’t have a great writing schedule. I tend to pack a bag on Saturday afternoon and high tail it to a hotel as often as I can (or hubby will allow) and get in 8,000-10,000 words in one fail swoop of a night. I’m hoping with her starting two-day-a-week kinder soon, I’ll start to get more words in during the week as well.
Tell us something about yourself that will surprise us!
I’m six feet tall and wear a size 9 shoe. I have terrible balance, horrible coordination, and never played any sport competitively except swimming in junior high where my coach raced me against high school kids and I won most of the time because I was already as tall as they were or taller.
Favorite Authors? Is anyone an auto-buy for you?
Sherrilyn Kenyon is my absolute favorite author.
What are you working on now?
I am writing book four in my Sanctuary Texas series and have five other books from different series in the que over the next six months.
What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t writing? How do you relax?
I like to read and watch TV. I’m a huge SyFy fan. Paranormal shows. Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Merlin, The Dome, Teen Wolf, Lost Girl, Bitten, the list goes on. I also enjoy NCIS, Criminal Minds, among others. Don’t even get me started on movies.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I can’t think of anything.
Thanks so much for letting us get to know you better!
